The Kano State Hisbah board arrested 20 Muslims for eating food in public during the fasting hours. It noted that this was done in a bid to maintain the sanctity of Ramadan.

According to the board, 5 more persons were arrested for selling food while Muslims were required to fast from dusk to dawn.

Ramadan, a significant observance in Islam is observed yearly. This year’s Ramadan is anticipated to conclude on Sunday, March 30.

The Deputy Commander of Hisbah Mujahid Aminudeen revealed that it was heartbreaking for adult Muslims to be seen eating and drinking during the ‘holy month’ meant for fasting.

It’s heartbreaking that in such a holy month meant for fasting, adult Muslims would be seen eating and drinking publicly. We won’t condone that, and that’s why we went out to make arrests,” he said.

According to Aminudeen, Hisbah only targets Muslims, stating that, “It is important to note that we don’t concern ourselves with non-Muslims.”

Aminudeen further revealed that the board has and will also take actions against individuals sporting “inappropriate haircuts,” those who are half dressed, as well as tricycle drivers who mix male and female passengers.

According to him, the operation began at the beginning of the fast and will persist throughout the month.

This action comes as a result of persistent calls from vigilant residents who report public eating violations.

“We do get calls from people who are enraged after seeing people eating in public, and we act fast by going to the area to make arrests.”

While reflecting on past arrests made, Aminudeen stated that although the past offenders were released, this year will be different as he assured everyone that those arrested will not be shown any leniency.

He thus, revealed that all 25 suspects will be tried in a Sharia court and face corresponding penalties.
