“I need controversy to eat,” Speed Darlington apologises to fans

Controversial Nigerian singer, Darlington Okoye, known as Speed Darlington, has apologized to his fans following the public outrage from a viral video which he appeared to admit sleeping with a 15-year-old virgin girl.

In the original video which is now widely condemned across social media, the singer described in detail an encounter he had with a teenage girl, about a decade ago. The video however sparked outrage and prompted calls for legal action against the artiste.

Responding to the wide spread condemnation, Speed Darlington posted a follow-up video on his Instagram page on Wednesday, claiming the viral story was nothing more than a publicity stunt, which was crafted to drive awareness to his music release.

The artiste also tendered apology to his fans and all who found the video offensive.

He said, “All my followers pissed off about the video I recorded in which I spoke about me sleeping with a 15-year-old girl, I am an artist. I need controversy to eat. If you are not trending you are not getting booked. Simple! Nobody is booking something that is not trending.”

“I have a new song, ‘Village Girl.’ The song is talking about f#ck this, f#ck that. This is my genre. I do not perform Christian music. When I dropped my song, I needed f#ck contents to push it. That is what I was doing. Don’t give it more life than it is supposed to have.”

“If any of you are offended, it’s alright. Apologies,” he said.

He continued to say that he is an artiste, how would anyone know him or his sound if he doesn’t promote it.

“I am an artiste. How do we know you and your own sound? You have to be controversial. Yes. So that’s what you see me doing in that video, selling my market.”

“So that’s what it is and I hope you guys understand. Peace and have a good day,” he added.
