The observance of Ash Wednesday today marks the beginning of Lent which is one of the most significant periods in the Christian Liturgical calendar.

The Ash Wednesday which started today, March 5, 2025 will usher in a 40-day season (excluding Sunday) of penance, fasting, prayer and alms giving.

The final celebration will be done on Easter, slated for April 20.

The Lenten season is observed in remembrance of Jesus and reflects the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert.

There are millions of people across the world who attend church service on Ash Wednesdays to receive ashes on their forehead.

The ashes on the forehead appear in the shape of a cross.

The ashes which are made from the burnt palms of the previous year’s palm Sunday serve as a reminder of human mortality and the need for repentance.

While emphasizing the themes of humility and reflection of human nature, the clergy often recites, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust, you shall return.”

Key Dates in Lent 2025:

  • Ash Wednesday: March 5
  • Palm Sunday: April 13
  • Maundy Thursday: April 17
  • Good Friday: April 18
  • Easter Sunday: April 20

The timing of Lent changes each year in accordance with the date of Easter, which is determined by the lunar calendar.

However, Easter falls unusually late this year, thereby making Lent and its observance later than most years.
