While expressing their disappointment, NANS stated that months after the Federal Government approved the increase of allowance from N33,000 to N77,000 (effective July 2024) the NYSC has not implemented the payment.

A statement released on Sunday by NANS National Vice-president Felicia Akinbodunse justified the probe, stating that the failure of the NYSC to commence payment of the newly approved corps monthly allowance by the end of February as promised by the Director-General of the corps.

Akinbodunse noted that findings by her office revealed corps members were still paid N33,000 for their February allowance against the N77,000 promised by the NYSC DG, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, in an official announcement.

Yushau, in the announcement, stated that corps members will start receiving the N77,000 in February 2025.

Akinbodunse further added that the NYSC has no justification to withhold the payment of the approved allowance to corps members, noting that the FG and other states have since implemented the new minimum wage payment of N70,000.

While calling on the Federal Government to investigate the matter to find the cause of the delay, Akinbodunse also asked for clarifications from the NYSC for the failure to implement the corps members’ allowance.

According to her, the non-payment of the increased allowance would amount to gross injustice on the part of corps members still receiving N33,000. She also added this failure will dampen corps members morale, especially with the current economic situation in the country.

“The leadership of the student body would equally interface with the NYSC to find out why corps members are yet to benefit from the new minimum wage of N77,000, even when staff of the NYSC are receiving the increase in pay from the Federal Government,” she further added.
